I have been on a "General" site since 2018 When I purchased my G4. But yesterday I sold that machine with intentions of new 1500 or an XP. I thought I knew for sure the 1500 but some recent FB posts about the lack of low range give at least a little pause. Someone got stalled going up a sharp grade and couldn't get going again. Can anyone actually calculate how much top speed might be reduced on the mountaineer model with the different rear end ratio? We don't do a lot of hardcore trail riding but here in Montana we do have some steep terrain. Thoughts, suggestions?
I should also mention the 77.5" door opening on my third cargo trailer. I am at least going to try the Ranger before I give up on the 1500 because the algebra/geometry sloped entrance ramp etc at least raise the question that I might make it, just no roof rack.
Anyway, glad to be here. During my time on the General forum site I learned a lot and was exposed to really helpful information. I am assuming I will also benfit from the collective knowledge on this forum site. Thank you.

Welcome! I'm interested also in the top speed of the mountaineer. If you just do the math a 20% reduction gives about 52 mph. I don't do a lot of high speed stuff but it's nice to be able to get down the road. I've had my XD over some pretty gnarly trails. It's always done well but I've been careful to always keep it moving. I can kinda feel it wouldn't want to get moving if it was up against some tough going.

Welcome to group. Just my opinion, I’m not sure that’s an issue anymore. I thought that was resolved with one of the latest transmission software updates. I could be mistaken. But, I’ve had my XD for almost 2 years, have about 2300 miles on it, and I’ve only had one issue with a steep incline. That was over a year ago. I did some pretty rough stuff this year on my elk hunt, and just had my XD in the tow/haul mode and 4WD. I had no issue or complaints crawling over some obstacles.

Welcome to the group DGUY! If I was choosing between the 1000 XP or the 1500 XD the choice would be very simple, the XD is so much better in every way. I've never experienced a problem with the XD trying to crawl over shit but I don't drive at 10,000 feet above sea level or crawl over 2 foot rocks. I have heard (and seen on you tube) people struggling to climb over obstacles at high altitudes early on but I think the transmission update solved most of this. Good luck with whatever you decide.

My door height is also short due to the door sprin. But the ramp and floor are dove tailed and I clear by 4 inches. No roof rack

Thanks folks. You have certainly helped support the decision I wanted to make. I'll be contacting dealers next week.
