I have a 2026 ranger XD 1500 Northstar Mountaineer edition, and I’ve gotten conflicting information on when the first service is.

One dealership has told me 200 hours, three others have said 25 hours. Called Polaris themselves twice as well, first person told me 25 hours, second person, a specialist has actually said they don’t know and are going to reach out to the service team and get back to me.

What is everyone else’s experiences and does anyone actually know?

In my mind, it makes a lot of sense to have a Polaris-trained tech perform the initial oil change and initial service checklist right at the 25-hour break-in period. This is what I did with my 2025 Ranger XD. From here on out, I intend to perform the bulk of the maintenance schedule myself.

That first oil change is important. I wanted a trained set of eyes checking the oil out and on the first multiple-point inspection.

These are very expensive machines. Not my intent to be flippant, but waiting for the "EVERY 12 MONTHS/ 200 HOURS/ 2000 MILES" point for "first service" seems crazy to me. I personally would be very leery of that dealer.

Edit/Addition - I strongly recommend asking the dealer/tech for a copy (or photo) of the initial service check sheet. I like having such info for my own records, but also use it as something of guide for my own checks.

See that’s what I thought as well. I feel like even if Polaris comes back and says that it’s 200 hours, that’s insane. It’s like manufacturers saying the fluid in a transmission is “lifetime” fluid. Yeah, because it’s going to die a heck of a lot quicker and then they make more money selling me a new transmission.

Curious to hear about others experiences as well

Yeah, 'insane' would be an appropriate way to describe that approach as far as I am concerned. I am not a tech nor am I anything of a UTV expert. I have spent a fair amount of my career working with off-road tactical trucks/engines and a fair amount of my life owning powersports toys. There is no way I would wait that long on a $2,000 lawn mower let alone one of these XD units. Best of luck.

I agree, 200 hours or 2000 miles is too long for a break in fluid change. I had my oil, front and rear diffs changed at around 750 miles. Also had everything lubricated, and transmission fluid checked. I’ve always thought an early break in fluid change is appropriate for all my vehicles.

Not to mention on my previous Polaris vehicles, there’s always been a 25 hour break in on them.

I changed the motor oil and the differentials to Amsoil at 25hrs. It's been every 2,000 miles since with the exception of the 6,000 mile mark got new Amsoil tranny fluid as well.

For all previous Rangers I owned Polaris said 25 hours. I believe the XD's first stated oil and diff change is 2000 miles or 200 hours. Personally I think both numbers are bonkers with one being too early and the other too late. Polaris has a history of stating early oil changes then due to the competition they can somehow magically double it. Here are 2 examples.

I had several Victory 92 cubic inch motorcycles that took 6 quarts of oil and Victory said it needed changed every 2500 miles. Then out of the blue they increased the motor to 100 cubic inches, reduced the oil to 4 quarts and said now it should have the oil changed every 5000 miles. Same oil, same tranny, basically the same motor with a bigger bore in it. Polaris also did this same shit with the 2025 Ranger 1000 XP. Gave the Ranger a facelift, better shifting, steering, stereo, and a few other things and magically again doubled the oil change recommendation from 100 hrs. /1000 miles to 200 hrs. / 2000 miles. I mean seriously WTF it's the same motor they have been using since 2018.

So back to the question at hand. I think it is a good practice to do the first oil change early in anything that has a motor. My plan was to do it before a 1000 miles and I think I had around 850 on it when it got done. The timing worked out that way because I had to take it to the dealer for something else. I run a lot of hard pack so I hit the mileage way sooner than the hours and to do an oil change at 250 miles was beyond stupid to me. I think everyone's use case is different and with an ounce of common sense I think most can make an intelligent decision that works for them.
