For those of you plowing...Pulley or plow strap?

Just purchased my new Mountaineer and bought the 84" Polaris plow. For those of you that plow, are you running a pulley or dedicated HD plow strap. I read that switching to strap can cause issues with the calibration of magnetic stop.

I had a plow on my ATV prior to this and just ran a HD tow strap with hook. 5 years and not one issue. But I don't want to cause any issues with the machine or it's calibration.

You probably already know this, but the rubber bumper/stop contains the magnet for the sensor built into the fairlead. If you run a strap, you'd need to remove that rubber bumper/stop - this creates the risk of possibly winding it too far in and breaking it or the winch. You'd need to be sure to stop the winch as soon as the plow is high enough.

There is no calibration on the magnet/switch... it's a very simple on/off device connected to the winch controller, it doesn't interface with RideCommand. Where it gets tricky is if you intend to use the automatic up-down through the ride command, you do run the risk of it snapping the cable when it automatically goes up. To run that feature, it uses a time based up/down, and it relies on the magnet to stop it from going in too far.

I hope I conveyed all of that in a way that isn't confusing.

I've always just used the rope that came with it. When it gets worn I cut a foot off and retie it.

Thanks for the info! I may just run it as it. I guess a pulley would also interfere with the magnetic sensor.

I asked the dealer and service guy about the auto up/down in ride command and he said he had never heard of that feature. Then told me I was prob referring to the optional hydraulic set up. I said NO I'm talking about the auto up down in ride command. He also told me there is no break in and no service required until 2000 miles! He also didn't know that the 1500 had a 6000lb synthetic rope. Thought it was 4500 like the Ranger 1000.

I'm just shocked at how much these dealers don't know about the machines they sell and service!

Typical dealer BS unfortunately. The RideCommand automatic plow control only works with the winch, it doesn't interface with the hydraulic setup.

What did you do for break in and initial service? 25 or 50hrs?

I use the winch and Plow Control mode......it works great for me. It works great for pushing snow to the end then backing up to take another swath. It's also easy to switch it to Back Drag mode or back to manual when needed.
